This is an informal listening test, not a medical diagnosis. It can't confirm or rule out amusia or hearing loss.
Start with the total, then check whether you did equally well on matching and changed melodies.
Your total is the number you answered correctly out of 12. A score of 10 to 12 is clearly above chance for this round, 8 to 9 is a mixed result, and 0 to 7 is a reason to try again in better listening conditions. These ranges are guidance for this test, not medical cutoffs.
Matching tunes shows how many identical pairs you recognized. Changed tunes shows how many one-note changes you caught. If one score is much higher than the other, you may have favored one answer or found one type of question harder. Choosing Same every time, for example, gives 6 out of 12 overall, with 6 out of 6 matching tunes and 0 out of 6 changed tunes.
Noise, poor speakers, interruptions, fatigue, and the need to remember the first melody can all affect a short result. A high score means you distinguished most of these pairs in this session. A low score does not by itself mean that you have hearing loss or congenital amusia.
If you hear the differences here but struggle to sing in tune, vocal pitch matching may be the harder skill. If low results continue in a quiet setting, or you also have trouble hearing speech or everyday sounds, a hearing professional can provide a proper assessment.

Hearing a pitch relationship and reproducing that pitch with your voice are related, but they are not the same task.
Pitch is the perceived highness or lowness of a sound. This test asks whether you notice a change inside two otherwise matching melodies. You never need to name a note, know music theory, have perfect pitch, or sing. The comparison relies on relative pitch: remembering how notes relate within a short phrase.
Singing adds another layer. You must control your breath and voice, listen to the note you produce, and adjust it. A person can hear that a sung note is wrong while still having difficulty moving the voice to the intended pitch. That points to vocal control rather than automatically meaning the person cannot perceive pitch.
The reverse can happen, too. Someone may reproduce familiar songs through practice and still find unfamiliar melody comparisons difficult. A full assessment of musical perception uses more than one short task, and a singing lesson answers a different question from a listening test.
“Tone deaf” is a casual label. Congenital amusia is a specific, lifelong difficulty with music perception.
Congenital amusia is a lifelong difficulty with aspects of music perception that is not explained simply by hearing loss, brain injury, or lack of music lessons. Pitch processing is often central, but formal batteries can also examine musical scale, contour, interval, rhythm, meter, and memory. One result from an unvalidated website cannot establish that pattern.
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders explains that pitch recognition involves processing after sound reaches the ear. A person can have typical hearing and still have difficulty recognizing pitch changes. Likewise, missing a browser melody does not mean the ear cannot detect ordinary speech or sounds.
The NIDCD Test Your Sense of Pitch uses distorted familiar tunes and describes itself as a test of pitch perception. This utilkit screen uses original, unfamiliar melodies instead, so prior knowledge of a song is not required. It is shorter and has not been clinically normed.
Keep the sound low but easy to hear. Turning it up will not make the result more accurate.
Start with your device volume low. Use speakers in a quiet room when practical, as the NIDCD instructions for its Distorted Tunes Test recommend avoiding high volume and minimizing distraction. The tones here are brief and use a conservative internal gain, but the final sound level still depends on your device, amplifier, speakers, and system settings.
Do not turn up a difficult item until it becomes uncomfortable. The NIDCD explains that hearing risk depends on sound level and duration in its noise-induced hearing loss guidance. Stop immediately for pain, pressure, ringing, dizziness, or discomfort.
This tool cannot measure decibels at your ear, hearing thresholds, one-sided hearing loss, tinnitus, or sudden hearing changes. If you notice a sudden loss of hearing, new one-sided symptoms, persistent ringing, or trouble understanding speech, seek qualified care rather than repeating online tones.
Every test uses the same balanced set of original melodies, presented in a random order.
Each melody contains five to seven notes represented as MIDI note numbers. The browser converts each number to an equal-tempered frequency using frequency = 440 × 2^((MIDI − 69) ÷ 12). Notes use a sine oscillator, last 330 milliseconds, and include short gain ramps to reduce clicks.
The scored bank contains six identical pairs and six changed pairs. In a changed pair, one internal note moves by 1, 2, or 5 semitones, with one upward and one downward change at every size. The question order is shuffled for each run, but the underlying bank and answer balance remain fixed.
Research tests often use many more questions. A 2020 validation study of the 36-item Jake Mandell Tone Deaf Test describes a similar task in which some pairs differ by one pitch. That study applies to the Jake Mandell test. This shorter utilkit test does not use its melodies, scoring norms, or cutoff.
Because the melodies are original, the test does not depend on recognizing a well-known tune. Synthesizing each note also keeps the timing and sound consistent within the test, but it does not calibrate your speakers or listening level.
