“Make the teams fair” can mean two different things. Pure random assignment gives every participant the same process, but it can produce uneven skill. Balanced assignment tries to create close competition, but it requires subjective ratings and gives the organizer more influence. The right method depends on whether your group values impartial selection, competitive balance, social mixing, or speed.

Use pure randomness when the process matters most

Random teams work well when participants have roughly similar experience, the activity is low stakes, or variety is the goal. Decide how to handle uneven group sizes before drawing. One team may have an extra person, or a participant may rotate between teams. Keep randomness verifiable but proportionate

This produces equal illustrative totals without requiring captains to negotiate after seeing the names.

  • Team A: ratings 12, 7, 6, and 1 — total 26.
  • Team B: ratings 11, 8, 5, and 2 — total 26.
  • Team C: ratings 10, 9, 4, and 3 — total 26.

The numbers are estimates, not facts about the players, and an equal total is only a starting point. Before revealing the teams, check the constraints that the score cannot capture: each soccer team may need a goalkeeper, two facilitators may need to be separated, or a participant may need to remain with a caregiver. Write requirements before assignment and distinguish them from preferences so the organizer is not quietly steering the result.

For repeated events, compare several sessions rather than treating one lopsided score as proof the method failed. Track team assignments and final margins, then review whether the same people are repeatedly grouped and whether newcomers receive support. A fair method should be explainable before the teams are revealed and adjusted from a pattern of evidence—not rerolled because someone dislikes one result.
